Yes, really. Greg Grunberg told Wil that JJ Abrams needed voice actors for the new Trek. Wil loves both voice acting and Star Trek, so he did it in a heartbeat. Pretty much every Romulan in the new Trek (except Nero) is a somewhat altered version of Wil Wheaton's voice, though one is his voice completely without alteration.
They thought it would be funny if they kept it a secret and so they didn't tell anybody that it was him and left him out of the credits. But JJ mentions it on the audio commentary and that has been floating around the internet, so he and Wil decided that now was an okay time to reveal the secret. Wil's blog post about it would seem to imply that he IS in the credits for the home video release, but don't quote me on that.

In my opinion, this makes an already incredibly awesome movie even more awesome.

Thu, November 5, 2009 - 12:36 PM"pretty much every." I couldn't tell you specifically about Ayel. But apparently JJ Abrams talks about it in the audio commentary. I'm sure more details will come out sooner than later.

I'm not in the theatrical credits. I may be in the credits on the DVD, though.

I don't know precisely what happened in this case, but having voice actors come in to do off-screen characters during post-production is very common. It's also pretty common to hire voice actors to dub background actors in post-production, because it's less expensive for the production and it makes things run more smoothly and quickly during filming.
Most of the characters I voiced were off screen, so maybe those lines were added after the film was cut together, and JJ or one of the other producers felt that additional dialog was needed to bridge some gaps that weren't apparent during production

"But sir, if you ignite the red matter..." is the one line that was Wil's voice directly without any digital alteration. All other romulans he voiced were altered to make it sound like different people.
